Many families make this an annual event on the death anniversary. The memories and experiences contained within us serve many functions. Memories help us understand our experiences and keep us connected.

Sometimes, just remembering the gist of an event can be quite helpful for this function of memory. We might plan to bring a lunch to work because we remember that the cafeteria gets crowded. Or we might remember our appreciation when an old friend wrote to us and therefore decide to write to someone with whom we have lost touch. Through my grief, I was fortunate to have the support of family, good friends, and our military community.

Prospective memory is also helpful with our partner’s important professional obligations and busy or difficult days. In particular, recalling events when we laughed hard with our partner increases reported relationship satisfaction more than any other type of happy event. Recalling these shared memories also ensures that we are part of each other’s thoughts, and the more we are together in thought, the stronger the relationship. - Next, participants chatted online with one another about the stories.
- If a participant recognized a photo they’d actually seen before, it counted as being remembered.
- Some families create small printed editions to share with relatives.
Imagine a “memorability filter” which enhances the mental stickiness of selfies. Given our poor intuition for what is memorable, we might not notice if our environments were manipulated in this way. It’s still unclear whether engineering the memorability of our world would have any meaningful impact on our behavior. Images with people in them tend to be more memorable than images of a blank landscape, and we remember brighter pictures with higher contrast better.
It is from our past achievements and the sense of fulfillment they brought, as well as the aspirations unfulfilled, that we draw the motivation to pursue new goals. These contextual cues from our history are like a roadmap that can help us navigate the complexities of the present with a better understanding of our motivations and reactions. Our past struggles, and the successful navigation of them, remain as reminders of our capacity to cope with future adversities. These memories become inherent assets, equipping us with the coping skills necessary to tackle the hurdles that lie ahead.
These shared narratives foster a sense of belonging and community, and they provide a common language with which we can express shared values and camaraderie. This process of looking back allows us to chart our personal evolution—each memory acting as a landmark in our development. As we encounter new challenges, these collected experiences provide a foundation from which we can grow and expand our understanding of ourselves and the world around us. Through recalling our experiences, we’re able to reflect on what we’ve learned, how we’ve adapted, and the wisdom we’ve gained.
